Two People Allegedly Shoot Each Other While In Same Car

OBETZ, Ohio, 6:13 p.m. EDT August 29, 2002 - A deadly overnight shooting that left one woman dead and a 23-year-old man in serious condition happened about 12:30 Thursday morning on an Interstate 270 Westbound offramp and Alum Creek Drive.

Two people allegedly shot each other while riding in the same car, closing a section of the outerbelt.

The people who were on that ramp and saw what happened not only called 911, but they also tried to do something to help, NewsChannel 4 reports. Several truckers tried to corral the shooter with their vehicles till the police arrived.

The 911 tapes convey the chaos as witnesses scrambled to call for help.

911 operator: 911, what is your emergency?

Caller: I was driving on the freeway ...a girl is laying on the street and a guy has just shot her.

As the 911 calls rolled in to the sheriff's office, it quickly became clear how dangerous the situation was, and how close the shooter was to the eyewitnesses, authorities said.

Caller: Black shirt, black pants, black hat. The trucks are all stopped here. We have him blocked in. There's going to be a female. She's laying on the side of the road.

911 operator: Do you know if he's a male white or black?

Caller: He's white.

Obetz investigators believe the couple may have shot each other while the car was still moving, but none of the witness on the 911 tape seems to notice the man has been shot as well.

Caller: He's a white guy, a young guy.

911 operator: He's young, he just shot the female laying on the side of the road.

Caller: He's mad. He got out. She's laying on the ground and as I drove by he shot her.

During the 911 calls, it becomes unclear what the man who has been blocked in by the truckers will do next.

Caller: I'm sitting here looking at him. He's walking between all these trucks.

911 operator: Listen, does he still have a gun?

Caller: He stuck it in his pocket.

911 operator: We got to have a code 40 in a pocket.

That was the end of the 911 tape. The witness said the man was walking back to the woman, and that's when the police officers arrived.

The results of the autopsy on the woman have not been released. The man is in Grant Hospital and is listed in serious condition, NewsChannel 4 reports.

How long could we maintain? I wondered. How long until one of us starts raving and jabbering at this boy? What will he think then? This same lonely desert was the last known home of the Manson family; will he make that grim connection when my attorney starts screaming about bats and huge manta rays coming down on the car? If so, well, we'll just have to cut his head off and bury him somewhere, 'cause it goes without saying that we can't turn him loose. He'd report us at once to some kind of outback Nazi law enforcement agency and they'll run us down like dogs. Jesus, did I say that? Or just think it? Was I talking? Did they hear me?
