I'm researching bariatirc surgery right now. My pcp said even if I dont WANT to do it, it's good to get registered as a fall back option incase I dont lose enough (which is what it's looking like is gonna happen). Anyway, the major cause of surgery related death is pulmonary embolism, so I checked that out on yahoo health, and this is what it said.

What causes pulmonary embolism?

The most common cause of pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein in your leg, breaks loose, travels to the lungs, and becomes trapped in one of the smaller lung arteries. Other substances, such as tumors, air bubbles, amniotic fluid, or fat that is released into the blood vessels, may also block an artery, but such causes are rare.

What are the symptoms?

Shortness of breath is the most common symptom of pulmonary embolism. You may have sharp chest pain, which can spread to your shoulder, neck, jaw, or arm. You may also have a cough that produces a pink, foamy mucus. Other symptoms may include anxiety, sweating, lightheadedness, fainting, rapid heart rate or palpitations, and an impending sense of doom. Symptoms of pulmonary embolism often begin suddenly.

IMPENDING SENSE OF DOOM!!!! Since when is that a symptom?? "Hello My name is Joey and I suffer from Chronic Sensori-doomitis, a fatal disease where you always know bad things are gonna happen but you can't do anything about them (like blood clots getting stuck in the lungs). I thought it was pretty funny. I can picture the post-op nurse going through a check list "feeling any shortness of breath, chest pains, impending sense of doom?" "well now that you mention it..." wtf anyway if I do go through with the surgery, I'm gonna max out my grad school level student loans to get the plastic surgery I'll need after I drop all this weight. My cousin has about 20 pounds of skin she needs taken off but she can't afford to do it. Why even have the surgery done? She wasn't unhealthy, she was just fat.
